A new MKCTV series called Shopportunity launches today to champion small retailers and founders across Milton Keynes. The show premieres at midday on Tuesday 2 December, with repeat broadcasts at 6pm and midnight, and aims to boost MK retail during the crucial Christmas gifting season.
Created by Debbie Lewis, community manager at the NatWest Accelerator, the project responds to the growing pressures facing small biz owners — from rising operating costs to shifting high-street habits. Debbie said the idea grew from conversations with founders who felt increasingly unseen, adding that Shopportunity gives them “a louder voice and a platform designed for them”.

Directed by MKCTV CEO Simon Ram, the series uses a dedicated TV shopping format to tell the stories behind independent retailers, makers and hospitality businesses from in and around Milton Keynes. Because the project is funded through community sponsorship, 100% of each sale goes directly back to the business owners. Debbie said this model ensures “the money stays where it matters — with local founders”.

The potential economic impact is significant. If every one of the city’s 300,000 residents swapped just one average Christmas gift for a locally made product, more than £7.2 million could be reinvested into the area’s small businesses.

The launch episodes are sponsored by Freddie Guilmard at the Red Thread Partnership, who allocated funding through the Red Thread Fellowship. Freddie said the project aligns with their mission to build “connected, caring and inclusive communities”, adding that leadership “lives in every shop, café and market stall where people serve others with passion”.

Shopportunity has been produced in association with MK College, with support from Stephen Bowen, ensuring local creative talent shaped every element of the programme — from hair and make-up to videography, editing and production. Simon said the team wanted the show to “reflect the real faces, stories and energy of Milton Keynes”.

The not-for-profit campaign will continue to grow, and the founders are inviting partnerships with community groups, business networks and local leaders to widen the show’s reach. A waiting list of founders keen to be featured is already building, and Shopportunity is seeking additional sponsors to extend its coverage and increase the number of episodes.
